Well what do you know, Instagram’s only gone and done it again.
Introducing IGTV, Instagram’s shiny and new video platform. And no, it’s not the same as Instagram Live. Read on for the scoop from Viva HQ…
IGTV is a place for vertical, lengthy videos on Instagram, and it’s available via both the normal Instagram app and the new standalone IGTV app.

1. IGTV is for vertical vids
We know, we know, the inner Spielberg in you can’t get your head around all this vertical stuff. It’s 16:9 or nothing in your head. Why mess with what’s worked for years?
Well, why not?
IGTV is all about the vertical. We’re not saying you couldn’t upload a horizontal video to it, but that’s not the best experience for anyone and could cause many head tilts among your audience (and not in a cute puppy way).
We’re sure that Instagram’s leaning to the vertical is to make anyone feel like they can start creating. Instead of the pressure to create professional videos on a camera, a vertical video platform like this naturally encourages you to record on your phone, as you would anyway.
Like we said earlier, vertical video makes for a better mobile experience, because put simply, your users don’t have to rotate their phones or just watch a smaller version. We know, #firstworldproblems.
It’s a brave move from Instagram to make vertical compulsory, but social media managers may not love it… (Hiya! That’s where we could help!)
This basically means that when you’re shooting video content, you’ll either have to shoot for two ratios, or make sure that you’re able to vertically crop the video. It means more editing, and you won’t be able to share the same video to all your social platforms.
2. Think of IGTV like YouTube, not Netflix
Even though you can upload videos up to one hour long on IGTV, we can’t see that you’ll be tuning in for your favourite shows just yet.
The goal of IGTV is to be more like a vertical version of YouTube, and less like Netflix. IGTV follows the same premise of Instagram itself – it’s meant more for following your favourite influencers and brands.
This is good news for businesses, because you don’t have to create a super polished video for IGTV. As far as production quality goes, think of it like a step up from your Instagram Stories and you’re onto a winner.
3. Instagram is experience-led
Instagram is trying to make the overall experience of IGTV a lot like traditional TV – it’s all about the experience!
Everyone who has an Instagram account can create their own IGTV channel (hmm… it’s almost like YouTube or something) which is the cubby hole where all your IGTV videos will live.
So just like when you turn on the TV and a show starts playing, when you open the IGTV app, a video will automatically begin.
Users watching can like or comment on IGTV videos while viewing, similar to how you can interact with Facebook videos.
