Mindfulness in the Workplace

As you probably already know, here at Viva we take a different approach to office life. Our team work hard to provide the best results for the amazing companies we work with by working together. This is evident in our proactive huddles, skill sharing mini-masterclasses, or even our lunchtime learning seminars. However, it is also important that we each practice mindfulness throughout the day to help keep our minds sharp and healthy.

How we implement mindfulness at work

Go for a 20 minute walk

An article published in the New York Times stated that walking on your lunch break boosted productivity and helped your mind feel refreshed. In early 2018, we trialled a 20 minute daily walk and the team were encouraged to go on a short walk during the day.

The daily walking helped us mentally by reducing stress and tension, and physically by getting our hearts pumping, so we decided to carry it on. The time of the walk was left up to the individual and whenever they thought they would benefit from it most. It definitely helps that we work in an area filled with amazing scenery (and quite close by to a few shops!).

Standing Desks

Going for a walk is a great way to get some exercise and clear your mind, but here at Viva we like to extend the wellbeing of staff within our four walls by providing standing desks. Not only are they great for posture, but they can help your cardiovascular system and aid weight loss. Standing desks are also proven to boost your mood and increase productivity, great for promoting mindfulness!

Allow yourself a break

We encourage our team members to get away from their desks and stretch their legs regularly, whether this is to make a cup of tea or grab a snack. It helps refresh our minds and gives us a break from sitting at our computers and staring at our screens. We also insist that lunch is eaten away from our desks.

Volunteering Hours

As part of our happiness incentive, Viva also offer 16 hours volunteering at a charity of their choice every year. Volunteering time still counts towards our work hours, but it means we get to give something back to our local community and causes that are close to our hearts.

Why choose mindfulness?

There are many ways that you can implement a mindfulness programme into your work day, even if it’s a simple five-minute breathing exercise on your lunch break. Mindfulness will help you feel better personally, but is also proven to boost productivity, reduce illness and help you become more efficient at work.
