As a recent University graduate I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to step into the shoes of a “real life adult” and indulge in the reality of working within an innovative PR agency for a week placement in their Rawtenstall office.
After graduating from Uni, there is a huge pressure on young people to have their life, and in particular a career, all planned out. This I definitely do not.
Still unsure of what I would like to do in terms of a career, but with the knowledge of how greatly I enjoyed the creative, PR and social marketing aspects of my degree, a placement at Viva is a fantastic opportunity to learn all about PR without sitting in front of a lecturer.
The life inside an office – although slightly different from the past three years of my life at University, which constituted attending six hours of lectures a week and attending a lot more hours in the local pub – made me feel comfortable and at ease nonetheless.
Unlike any work experience role which I have previously encountered (that remained largely dependent on my role as barista) I was thrown straight in at the deep end at Viva and given real tasks.
The team helped and encouraged me to creatively carry out tasks independently as I was given responsibilities that included writing press releases and blogs, getting my head around social media scheduling, creating social plans and learning to use software to create media lists.
And that was all just in my first day!
Viva has showed me what University didn’t – that PR isn’t just about writing press releases. The agency has provided me with an insight into how to integrate campaigns within a transforming multi-media sphere and the different elements of communicative practice that make it all possible.
The experience I’ve had at Viva has taken me from a University graduate feeling a little lost, to a girl with a much more positive outlook on the future and perhaps a possible career path.
Despite being fresh out of Uni and (literally) being the new kid on the block, every member of staff at Viva made me feel at ease and went the extra mile to help me in any way possible.
